Homemade Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein

A cozy classic combining tender beef, vibrant broccoli, and lo mein noodles, packed with flavor and perfect for family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or spaghetti)
  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Noodles: Start by boiling a pot of water. Once it’s bubbling, toss in your lo mein noodles or spaghetti. Cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and rinse under cold water to stop cooking. Add sesame oil to prevent clumping.
  2. Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine sliced flank steak with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, and a splash of water. Let it marinate for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Prep the Veggies: While the beef is marinating, wash and cut your broccoli into florets. Slice green onions, mince garlic, and grate ginger.
  4. Heat the Wok: In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil on medium-high heat. Add marinated beef in a single layer and sear for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  5. Cook the Broccoli: Remove beef from the pan. In the same skillet, add broccoli florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until vibrant green and crisp-tender.
  6. Combine Everything: Add minced garlic and grated ginger to the broccoli, stirring for 30 seconds. Then, add the beef back into the pan with remaining sauces. Mix well for another minute.
  7. Add Noodles: Toss in your cooked lo mein noodles, mixing everything well. If too thick, add a splash of water or extra soy sauce.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Plate your Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein and top with sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

For added variety, consider substituting beef with tofu for a vegetarian version or experiment with seasonal vegetables.
