The Perfect Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
  2. Heat the milk in a small saucepan or microwave until warm, then add butter.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Add the milk-butter mixture and the egg, stirring until mostly combined.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Mix the filling: Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and softened butter.
  7. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread the filling evenly on top.
  8. Roll the dough tightly from one long side and cut into 12 equal pieces.
  9. Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Make the icing by whisking together powdered sugar and milk.
  12. Drizzle the icing over warm rolls before serving.
