Homemade Chocolate Cinnamon Rolls

Indulge in gooey, pillowy chocolate cinnamon rolls that bring warmth and sweetness to any day.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (warm)
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Warm the milk and butter: In a small saucepan, gently warm the milk and melted butter.
  3. Mix it all together: Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients, add the egg and stir until combined.
  4. Knead the dough: Flour your work surface and turn the dough out, knead for about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Let it rise: Place your kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover and let it rise until doubled in size.
  6. Roll it out: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll into a rectangle.
  7. Spread the filling: Brush melted butter on rolled-out dough, sprinkle the cinnamon and chocolate chips.
  8. Rolling and cutting: Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into pieces.
  9. Second rise: Place rolls in a greased dish, cover and let rise again.
  10. Bake them up: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 18-22 minutes.
  11. Finish with glaze: Mix powdered sugar and milk to create the glaze, drizzle it over warm rolls.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding nuts or substituting some chocolate with dried fruits.
