Black Velvet Cupcakes

Decadent and rich chocolatey cupcakes with a stunning appearance, perfect for any occasion.

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably black cocoa)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 cup black cocoa buttercream (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your cupcake tray with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients in a separate bowl: Blend buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and white vinegar.
  4. Mix it all together: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until smooth.
  5. Fill the cupcake liners about two-thirds full with the batter.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let the cupcakes cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Frost the cooled cupcakes with black cocoa buttercream.

Notes

For variations, consider adding a couple of teaspoons of red food coloring for a red velvet twist or using flax eggs for a vegan option.
