Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

A nostalgic and comforting dish combining ground beef, creamy gravy, and served with mashed potatoes.

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Mashed potatoes, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brown the beef and onions in a large skillet over medium heat, seasoning with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until the beef is browned and onions are tender.
  3. Make the gravy by sprinkling flour over the beef mixture, cooking for about 2 minutes, then slowly adding beef broth and milk.
  4. Add the sour cream and melted butter to the bubbling mixture and stir.
  5. Transfer the beef mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  6. Bake for about 30-40 minutes until hot and bubbly.
  7. Mash the potatoes if serving, and prepare with butter and milk.
  8. Serve and enjoy after resting for 5-10 minutes.

Notes

This dish can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for busy weeknights. Customize with different meats or add vegetables for variety.
