Classic Southern Hamburger Steak with Onion and Mushroom Gravy

A comforting Southern dish featuring juicy hamburger patties smothered in rich onion and mushroom gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Optional: Mashed potatoes for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined, keeping the texture tender, and shape into 4 to 6 equal portions.
  2. Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, sauté onion and mushrooms over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes until onions are translucent and mushrooms are tender.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the sautéed vegetables. Stir for 1-2 minutes, then gradually add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Return the Patties: Add the hamburger patties back to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Taste and Serve: Adjust seasoning if necessary, then serve the hamburger steak topped with gravy.

Notes
