The Ultimate Patty Melt

A delightful blend of juicy beef, gooey cheese, and perfectly caramelized onions, all enveloped in crisp, buttery bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of bread (rye, sourdough, or whole grain)
  • 1/2 pound ground beef (or lean ground turkey)
  • 2 slices of American or Swiss cheese
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • Butter (unsalted)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients. Slice your onions and gather your cheese. Ground your beef into a ball.
  2. Caramelize the onions. In a skillet over medium heat, melt a tablespoon of butter and add your sliced onions.
  3. Shape the patties. Shape your ground beef into a patty slightly larger than your bread, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook the beef patties. In the same skillet, add butter and cook your patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  5. Assemble your patty melts. Place buttered bread in the skillet and layer with patty, cheese, and onions.
  6. Grill to perfection. Grill until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Slice and serve. Take out of the pan, let it rest, and slice diagonally.

Notes

Serve with homemade fries, a garden salad, or classic burger sauce.
